Cafe Terrace at Night, also known as The Cafe Terrace on the Place du Forum was rendered in Arles, France in September 1888. The style of the painting is unique for Van Gogh with the warmth of colours and the depth of the perspective. In this period he was especially fascinated in painting starry sky.

The yellow house (1888) * Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Place Lamartine, Arles, France, was the house where, on May 1, 1888. Van Gogh rented a small yellow house situated on the Place Lamartine. He intended that it would become the center of his Studio of the South. Son Paul Gauguin joined him and lived there for nine weeks The yellow house is a resemblance from the amount of time than they underwent together, as well as an approach able-minded of its brickle, amicability, art and , folly.

Self-Portrait in Front of the Easel (1888) * Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Vincent almost never painted himself as an artist. Most of his self portraits are painted in a more sketchy way and show only his face.
This painting shows much more details and was signed by the artist prominently, which means that he was quite pleased with it.

I feel that I am been painted by Van Gogh himself! Don’t you see? He is looking at me. Maybe I will be inside Van Gogh paintings…

The Night Cafe in the Place Lamartine in Arles (1888) * Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, USA

This painting features one of the unusual perspectives he frequently used. The floor of the cafe covers a large portion of the canvas. It almost appears that the artist was floating high in the room to achieve this vantage point.

It is fun to learn art history going literally inside the painting. I can feel the place as it was on Vincent time. The glare of gaslight permeates the space. Local down-and-outs and prostitutes are depicted slouched at tables and drinking together at the far end of the room, absorbed in their individual loneliness and despair, which is bitterly contrasted with the shocking colors of the billiard table, wine bottles, and glasses.

The Night Café in the Place Lamartine in Arles was a place Vincent van Gogh often went to eat his meals. The gas lighting which had been recently introduced, allowed the café to stay open all night.

The unusual perspective, the glow of the gas lights, and the contrasting red and green color are combined to achieve an interesting view of the café.

The artist slept during the day and worked three consecutive nights while completing the picture of Café de l'Alcazar, an all-night haunt that he knew quite well.

Fishing Boats on the Beach at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (1888) * Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

In May 1888 Vincent went to the coast (Les Saintes Maries-de-la-Mer) for a short stay. There he made nine drawings of the boats on the shore. Vincent used these as a basis for paintings when he returned home in Arles. He was fascinated by the colors of the sea and the shapes of the little fishing boats.

Arles was an inward-looking depressed town when Van Gogh lived in the late nineteenth century. Today Arles is a major town on the tourist circuit, its fame sealed by the extraordinarily well-preserved Roman arena. It was the key city of the region in Roman times.

Bridge in the rain (1887) * Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Bridge in the Rain illustrates Van Gogh’s interest in Japanese art. He painted this scene after a woodcut by Utagawa Hiroshige, which he had in his own collection. The borders are filled with calligraphic figures borrowed from other Japanese prints.

I was using a fantastic face light and this made the picture much better:

Dancing in the rain at the “Bridge in the rain (1887)” from Van Gogh.

Van Gogh made two other paintings in the same fashion: The Courtesan (after Eisen) and Flowering Plum Tree, after another print by Hiroshige. One distinction with regard to the originals is the use of color: Van Gogh used different, brighter colors, or enhanced the color contrasts.

Some pictures were taken running the Second Life WindLight. You can see how the sky and the sea look real.

Waw!!! No lightings on the original painting!!!!

The influence of Japanese prints remains visible in Van Gogh’s later works, especially in his strong outlines and color contrasts, and in the way he cropped his compositions.

Gauguin’s chair (1888) * Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

At the end of October 1888, the painter Gaugain arrived in Arles to join Van Gogh at the Yellow House, where Vincent wanted to start his Atelier du Midi. During this period he painted Gaugains’ chair, as well as his own chair. These works are very different, like the characters of Van Gogh and Gaugain.

The Courtyard of the Hospital at Arles (1889) * Oskar Reinhart Collection 'Am Romerholz'.
This is the hospital courtyard where Vincent stayed after cutting his ear lobe.

On 23 December 1888 Van Gogh stalked Gauguin with a razor and then cut off the lower part of his own left ear lobe, which he wrapped in newspaper and gave to a prostitute named Rachel, asking her to "keep this object carefully."

My idea on this picture was to contrast the fantastic Van Gogh yellow paint with this beautiful red black gown.

Brief history: Van Gogh spent his early adult life working for a firm of art dealers. Van Gogh is a pioneer of what came to be known as Expressionism. He produced more than 2,000 works, including around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches, during the last ten years of his life. Most of his best-known works were produced in the final two years of his life.

Today the old hospital courtyard looks almost exactly like Vincent's painting of 1889.
