By Anna Avalanche, Gisa Miles and Luiz Speedwell

Pictures by Marly Rocha and Assessora de Comunicação da Agência de Desenvolvimento Turístico Estado do Tocantins

This was our latest article publish at déjà vu Magazine. Touch here to read my new article

“Capim dourado” - called golden grass (syngonanthus nitens) - actually is the stem of a small white flower from the “always-alive” plant species. In the flower are found the seeds that guarantee the perpetuation of the plant (native of Jalapão), and income for some people who live in “Jalapão”.

Golden grass only sprouts in “Jalapão” (read the article Jalapão the
world gorgeous desert ). It’s the thin stem with intense gold metallic shine that is used by local women to turn the grass into a variety of craft items: bags, earrings, bracelets, hats, mandalas (wall-hangings), baskets and decoration objects. These pieces with unique beauty have crossed Tocantins’ borders, distributed throughout Brazil and also abroad.

The art of working with golden grass was taught to local women by indigenous who inhabited the region. Today, the techniques of golden grass handicraft are still taught from generation to generation in the village of Mumbuca and also in the cities of Mateiros, Ponte Alta, Novo Acordo, Santa Tereza, Lagoa do Tocantins and in Prata, a village of São Felix do Jalapão County.

Besides tourism, another factor that is revolutionizing the local “Jalapão” economy is the growing popularity of golden grass craft. The handicraft made from golden grass straw look impressive brightness similar to gold. Almost like gold metal some pieces of golden grass handicraft can cost over $500.00 USD overseas.

If you ever have the opportunity to visit “Tocantins” and the “Jalapão” desert you must buy a souvenir made from golden grass and see how the skillful hands from artisans’ women work the grass. Amazing beautiful.

All handicraft jewelry are made by golden grass

Bonito is beautiful

By Anna Avalanche, Gisa Miles and Luiz Speedwell

This was our latest article publish at déjà vu Magazine. Touch here to read my new article

The city of Bonito - means beautiful in Portuguese, but the word beautiful can’t describe this wonderful place - distance about one thousand kilometer away from São Paulo and a little bit more from Rio de Janeiro, is one the most complex and fascinating natural area of water leisure in the world. Despite its distance from the Brazilian major cities, Bonito has a very good hostelry and restaurants infrastructure.

A paradise at the south of Pantanal, in Mato Grosso do Sul state, with hundred of waterfalls, lakes and rivers of pristine water, over 80 caves dry and flooded, and endless species of fish and other wild animal that, all, can be reached without much trouble is a better definition for Bonito.

The visitors can see these wonders very closely in a tight contact with best Mother Nature can offer. Does it sound boring? No way! The amount and distribution of wild animals, as well as the surprising geography, guarantee a fantastic experience on each of the sites you visit.

It would be impossible to express and summarize all the good things you can do there. You must come in Bonito to feel it by yourself how it is scuba diving, light rafting, rappel, slide on small waterfalls, horse riding, caving, trekking, snorkel and, of course, taste the delicious regional food before or after all the fun and excite. All you have to do is pack your bags, pick the route and … have a lot of enjoyment!

Everybody who visits Bonito fall in love for the region. Many Hollywood personalities have already been there like Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford and Richard Gere. Since the ninety’s Bonito is a celebrity “refuge”. Therefore if you come to visit “paradise” doesn’t be surprised if you find a celebrity.

Anhumas Abyss (Abismo Anhumas) - A crack on the ground creates a vertical abyss, a real trip to the centre of the earth. The 72 meter rappel descent leads to a clear water lake the size of soccer field. The fun didn’t end yet! You can snorkelers and scuba dive 18 meters deep into the underwater cave complex. Even if you don’t want to dive there are many Speleothem, true sculptures produced by Nature in the dry part of the cavern to be enjoy. This is unforgettable beauty exciting “adventure”.

Buoys and kayak Cross (Travessia com Bóia e Caiaque ) - A thrilling adventure along the Formosinho river waterfalls, with more than 7 rapids to skirt over. It provides lot of fun for everyone.

Adventure and Formoso River Tour boat ( Aventura e Passeio de bote pelo Rio Formoso ) – The adventure start when you walk 1.700 meters trail in the middle of the bushes to Figueira Docks. From there starts the snorkeling descent of Formoso River, passing through small pristine waterfalls and exploring underwater holes. Furthermore at the same river, but in other point there is an 8 Km, waterfalls and rapids, trip on rubber boats. The visual is incurable and on the riverbanks you’ll see plenty of wildlife and birds.

Blue lake Grove (Gruta do Lago Azul) – One hundred meter deep in the ground there is a 90 meters profound lake of solid blue water. Sunbeams permeate the lake, producing a spectacle of rare beauty. Both the cavern`s roof and the bottom are replete with Speleology formations of different shapes and sizes. At the bottom of the cavern there is a surprise! The prehistoric skeletons of a giant ground sloth and a saber tooth tiger.

Saint Michel Grove (Gruta de São Miguel) - The way from the reception to the grove entrance is made through a suspended bridge among the trees where a variety of birds can be observed. The panoramic view is fabulous. In the grove, you can take a nice walk among many Speleothem including some beautiful and exclusive cave formations.

Bodoquena Ecological Park (Parque Ecoturistico da Bodoquena) - It is the only attraction run by an environmental non-profit organization. There are horse riding, canoeing, mountain-bike and trekking for all ages. You can stay in the park houses and participate in environmental education activities.

Baia Bonita Ecological Reserve - Natural Aquarium (Reserva ecológica Baía Bonita - Aquário Natural) - Baía Bonita offers a rare type of immersion, in waters as clear as they can be, through a 900 meter course. Finally you can feel as a child where an elastic bed and a flying fox device are guarantees of pure fun.

Fish River (Rio do peixe) - A fascinating trekking at Água viva Farm, usually guided by the owner. The trail takes about 2 hours, passing through waterfalls, natural pools and little underwater groves. Rio do Peixe means River from the Fish and you will see how true it is. A lot of wild and beautiful fishes are seen when you swim at the lagoons and enjoying the waterfalls. You might even touch one as the fishes are not afraid of human.

Sucuri River (Rio Sucuri) - The name can sound threatening (Sucuri is huge Snake which can eat a calf), but floating down this river offers no risk. On the contrary, you’ll travel for two hours in the company of numerous species of wild life animals and fish. Children and adults from all over the world have enjoyed this unique attraction. You can also do an ecological ride horse or even a bike tour that is very pleasure and funny.

Mystery Lagoon (Lagoa Misteriosa) This place is located in Jardim a small city near Bonito. It is a lagoon of blue waters, amazing for its depth and water transparency all the year, its visibility is superior to 40 meters but you won’t see its floor. A spectacle of pure nature, lots of adrenaline and mystery. An unforgettable sensation of floating or scuba diving in the most profound and mysterious cave ever, no one has reach its bottom and the deeper a professionals diving got, about 220 meters, wasn’t enough to see its floor. Just fluctuate and contemplate the blue deep abyss and the vertical walls which reflect the streams of light will take your breath. It’s a unique place in the world. This is pure nature and lots of adrenaline feelings.

Come to visit Bonito if you want to have a lifetime adventure and after the fun and adventure try our suggestion dish, the piranha soup!

There is much more to see and visit. What are you waiting? Come to visit Bonito.

Caipirinha exotic cocktail - typically Brazilian

This was our latest article publish at déjà vu Magazine. Touch here to read my new article

Enjoy, but if you will drive don’t drink!!!

By Anna Avalanche, Gisa Miles and Luiz Speedwell

Pronounced 'KIE-PUR-REEN-YAH', this fresh, exotic cocktail typically brazilian is known nationally and internationally and has attracted more and more admirers in the whole world.

The Caipirinha was born in São Paulo in the 18th century. At that time, the cachaça (a distilled liquor made of sugar cane), abundant in the villages, was consumed by his pure lovers, all men. Not to leave the shot when they were sick, they have transformed medicine in adding lemon and garlic - ingredient once despised. Much later, in the 1950s with the development of these places, the drink has won fans in cities and ended up like this: Cachaça, lemon, sugar and ice.

The drink became almost compulsory in all types of events, from festivals to weddings to birthdays and also in all the bars. The traditional Caipirinha is made with cachaça, sugar and lemon, but as is the nature of Brazilian creativity and innovation, today you can find in the events also caipirinhas made with sake or vodka with fruit as strawberry, kiwi, watermelon, and passion fruit. But around the world the traditional caipirinha is the most famous version mainly in Europe and the U.S.

Than enjoy the recipe

1 lemon
2 ounces of Cachaça
Sugar to taste
Ice cubes
Wash the lemon and roll it on the board to loosen the juices. Cut into pieces and place them in a glass. Sprinkle with sugar and crush the pieces (pulp side up) with a pestle. (We have a long, wooden one from Brazil, made specifically for this purpose.) Just enough to release the juice, otherwise it'll get bitter. Add the Cachaça and stir to mix. Add the ice and stir again. It is delicious and potent!

You can also make a pitcher of Caipirinha. Figure out how many people and multiply amounts. If you can't find Cachaça where you live, use good vodka. The drink will then be called Caipiroshka. No vodka? Use white rum and you will have a Caipiríssima. Caipirinhas made with sake and lychee are all the rage in Brazil now! Try one...

Special thanks to Luiz Speedwell for his astonishing beverage.

Reis do Brazil a Real Singer in the Virtual World

By Anna Avalanche, Gisa Miles and Luiz Speedwell

Graça Reis or just Reis for her increasing number of admirers all over the world is graduated in singing by Bahia Federal University (UFB - Brazil) with music specialization in Berlin. In a period where talent, occasionally, is more important than academic education, at least in Brazil, Reis has both. Reis came from a musical background that was somewhat academic, but also brought personal experience and professional knowledge of Brazilian popular music. Also, she is gorgeous, sexy and has an extraordinary voice. Someone said “a voice of sugar with the strength of steel”.

Her biography is a mix of popular and erudite participation, sometimes accompanied by great popular and famous Brazilian musicians. In 2000 she had the main female role in the pop opera “Rei Brasil”, for the celebration of Brazilian 500th discovery anniversary, with an audience of 6,000 people on each performance at Salvador – Bahia.

In 2002 Reis perform “Brizzi do Brasil”, during two months at “Teatro XVIII”, in Salvador, featuring Caetano Veloso, Arnaldo Antunes, Virginia Rodrigues, Margareth Menezes and Zeca Baleiro, among others as special guests.

Regardless of her professional boyhood, Graça has also international experience with tours in many different countries. Reis live presence is ethereal and hypnotic with her live vocals expanded beyond melancholy female voice. She sings lyrics in English, Portuguese, Italian, French, with the charm of her Brazilian sexy voice. All her talent was crowned in 2004 as special guest in Manuel Paulo’s album (EMI).

2005 was her start shining year as a celebrity. That year she took the main role in “Mambo Mistico” a musical by Aldo Brizzi and Alfredo Arias produced by “Théâtre de Chaillot” – Paris. She also released in 2005 her debut album “Aço do Açúcar” (Sugar of Steel). The title is at the same time the album title and the band name. The band is from Salvador-Bahia and is formed by Reis; Alex Mesquita - guitars; Luizinho do Jêje, percussion; and by Aldo Brizzi on keyboard and electronics. Aldo is the main author of the group’s songs and producer of the project. Aço do Açúcar rehearsals are like a laboratory of experimentation of new esthetics mixing with elements of Brazilian, African, and European music forms and constantly seeks to transcend the difference between traditional sounds and mainstream pop influences. These result in a sophisticated music with the ability to provoke and satisfy.

From 2006 she works with Aldo Brizzi on the Reis project. That included Europe tours in Italy, France, Germany, UK (festival shows like Aterforum in Ferrara, GMEM in Marselha, Oxident in Berlim, Notting Hill Arts in London, Preguillac in France and La Palma in Roma).

In 2007 she sang in Egypt (Cairo Opera House) and presented the “Loving Glance” concert tour in Brazil; Chile, Bolivia and Europe. In 2008 she records her EP “Reis” lunched in Mexico and USA. This EP is pure electronic music produced by Aldo Brizzi with live vocals expanded beyond melancholy female voice by Reis. It develops into a wide range of electronic and electronic-influenced music and combines elements of trip hop, IDM, and classical into Brazilian blends such as Bossa Nova. Tempo varies from quite down tempo to very fast in break core-derived and drum’s bass styles. Melodies and harmonies create a rich and tense sound that emphasizes the erotic, mystic and poetic themes of the lyrics and their realities, stranger than dreams

She loves a new challenge and presented her pure natural and sophisticated voice also in the virtual worlds like Second Life. Reis multimedia concert is something out of this world, with video-art projected on screens and singer costumes design. Reis is Reis Alter in Second Life. Her presence in SL is uniqueness and open new horizons. A real life professional career extended and developed also in Second Life. In SL Reis Alter is often invited by prime venues such as Zurich Opera, La Scala Milano Theater, Slimmie's, Cairo Opera. The repertoire is the same intriguing blend of new trip hop and electronic of the Real Life Reis concerts.

If you are Reis fan or would like to hear her amazing voice go to her Second Life events below.

Brazilian Carnival: Why Just Watch, When You Can Join the Parade?

By Anna Avalanche, Gisa Miles and Luiz Speedwell

This was our latest article publish at déjà vu Magazine for the April Issue. You can also find this article on the new AAT Deja Vu Magazine Interactive . To know how to get yours click here
Enjoy!!!

Brazil is internationally known for Carnival but there are more different carnival parties depending on the city and cultural influence. In small cities there are salons parties celebrations. Bigger cities like Salvador, Pernambuco, São Paulo and Rio offer different kind of music, dance and more popular participation (joining) in the carnival celebrations. Nevertheless it is almost impossible to remain as a mere spectator – everyone participates, everyone plays along and those who visit, become fans of these wonderful parties. Which is the best carnival parade in Brazil? Well the ones you visit, of course!

In Salvador, Bahia State, the Carnival effectively begins in December, with the opening of the celebrations by the Conceição Beach feast. But it is in February that the merry makers of all ages fill up the capital of Bahia, animated by sound trailers – large and colorfully decorated trucks equipped with powerful loud speakers, from where singers sing and make people dance.

In São Paulo, the Carnival had been formerly a party restricted to saloons. Overtime, it conquered the streets, following the influences of the Rio de Janeiro Samba Schools.

In the state of Pernambuco, we have the Olinda and Recife carnivals. Frevo dance emerged from this location, one of the most enticing rhythms of the nation. For a week, people go out on the streets in costumes and dance frenetically, next to traditional giant dolls and maracatus.

Rio de Janeiro- the joy of the carioca (Rio de Janeiro citizens) is contagious for those who visit Rio to participate in the Carnival – regardless of their origin. It calls on everyone to move their feet, let their arms loose, let their eyes shine and fully participate in this feast, the order is one: fun. Those who have seen it before come back for more. For first timers the impact is unforgettable. The Parade of the Samba Schools in Rio is one of the greatest shows on earth. It is like an opera, in which scenery and fantasy float past the public, the story being told with the song, the symbols, the costumes and the floats, which year by year become more creative. The parade usually starts around 8pm, and goes on through the night, sometimes lasting until dawn, though the rising sun softens the effect and the show is more spectacular at night.

What is the latest trend at Carnival in Rio de Janeiro? Tourists are no longer just watching the parade. Nowadays, tourists don costumes, join a samba school for the night, and fully participate in the festivities.

Yes! You can! Participate in the samba championship, in any school of your choice. You don't even need to know how to dance or anything of the sort. "All you need to do is to go out there and have fun".

Samba sensation form: Times archives

- Brazil’s carnival dates back to the 18th century and is a mix of Portuguese and African traditions. The first parade of samba schools was in 1928
- The top 12 samba schools parade in Rio’s Sambodromo stadium with up to 6,000 drummers, dancers and other participants. Each school has a queen, who leads the drums corps
- A panel of 40 judges grades each samba group in ten categories, from floats to costumes
- 700,000 visitors travelled to Rio de Janeiro for the carnival last year

Madonna live in Brazil - Anna Avalanche Second Life Blog

This was an article about Madona in Brazil publish in the February Issue at déjà vu Magazine. Enjoy!!!

Madonna live in Brazil

By Anna Avalanche, Gisa Miles and Luiz Speedwell

Pictures credit for Marcelo Rossi

What to say about Madonna!!! She is hot, she is Pop, she is Madonna (from Italian: My lady, lady, milady, Virgin Mary) and she was live in Brazil last week as part of her music tour.

Madonna is the most famous pop star in the world and her songs are always successful. She has been regarded as "one of the greatest pop acts of all time" and dubbed the "Queen of Pop" by various sources.

For her fans doesn’t matter that Madonna is ranked by the Recording Industry Association of America as the best-selling female rock artist of the twentieth century and the second top-selling female artist in the United States with 63 million certified albums. Guinness World Records list her as the world's most successful female recording artist of all time and the top-earning female singer in the world with an estimated net worth of US$490 million, having sold over 200 million records worldwide. This could mean nothing for the fans and the audience but on March 10, 2008, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and this year she surpassed Elvis Presley as the artist with most top ten hits in the history of Billboard Hot 100.

But Madonna is not only a singer. Madonna is Madonna, almost a deity in the eyes of fans. She is a dedicated mother and her children have accompanied her trough the tour. Furthermore she is also a women's business which is always a step ahead of its time. Madonna is the queen of the dance floor. Her career has swept from the early 1980s to the late 1990s, ranging from pop charts to MTV to the silver screen. And still, Madonna continues to redefine herself. At once, she is a sultry siren, a marketing phenomenon, a movie diva, and a mother.

Even with the divorce with her former husband, Guy Ritchie just announced. There is a Santa Claus at least for Madonna’s fans. Her tour brought to Brazil Santa Claus earlier this year. The singer returned to Brazil for the most awaited show of the year. Far from the Brazilian stage since 1993, she came back for 5 concerts in Brazil, 2 in Rio de Janeiro, in the Maracanã Stadium, and 3 in Sao Paulo in the Morumbi Stadium.

Sticky & Sweet Tour is the eighth world tour of the artist. The tour is based on the latest album released in April 2008, Hard Candy, premiered in 1st place in the parades of more than 30 countries. The spectacle traveled to Europe, North and South America. It has broken new records of audience with more than 1.25 million tickets already sold. Do you think she is lucky as a singer and unlucky in love (the correct quote should be “Unlucky at cards, lucky in love”)? Maybe! But she is Madonna, “My lady” the inspiration of thousands of women and fans.

Here in Brazil about 70 thousand people in each concert crowed the stadiums to see the pop Diva, even under rain like happened in Rio and São Paulo. Cheerful and agitated, the spectacle was planned in each detail. Much of the audience jumps sings and shakes it frantically while, on stage, the queen of pop proof those 50 years is an age that insists on ignoring his body. Supported by a team of 12 dancers, Madonna dances non-stop, jump ropes, and could play guitar, backed by musicians who appear even when she sing out of tune - moments that happen, but for the audience, not overshadow the brightness of the spectacle.

Even with some troubles like heavy rain that causes her to slip and fall on the stage the super pop singer lavish energy and satisfaction. The incident didn’t bother her at all. At the end of the show Madonna yield to the hot Brazilian fan audience and promise – “Te amo” (in Portuguese I love you) and “I am very happy to be back and next time I won’t take so long”. She also surprised the audience with a passionate malicious worry about the wet crowd asking if they were wet because of the heavy rain, or maybe… she was meaning other thing! With Madonna who knows! Again on this show she ends with the Brazilian national official soccer team T shirt. She said that she would like the Brazilian shows to be the featured on her new DVD! She loved her shows in Brazil and the passion of Brazilian tropical friendly country.

On her least show in Brazil Madonna said that was unhappy because the end of the tour but at the same time she was happy to end it on Brazil. She shouts: “You are the best public that exists” before sing the music You Must Love Me.

The Christmas around world

This is my last 2008 article for déjà vu magazine. Hope you all enjoy, and if you do, please leave a comment.

The Christmas around world

By Anna Avalanche, Gisa Miles and Luiz Speedwell

The arrival of Christmas inspires people around the world. The people of many different continents come together in this period of confraternities, meetings of family, hot meals and of course, exchange gifts.

One of the most colorful celebrations of humanity is the greatest festival of Christianity. It is time when all the fantasy is permitted.

Christmas is a day on which commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. In antiquity, Christmas was celebrated in several different dates, because it is not known with accuracy the date of the birth of Jesus. It was only in the fourth century that Dec. 25 was established as the official date of celebration. In ancient Rome, the December 25 was the date on which the Romans celebrated the beginning of winter. Therefore, it is believed that there is a relationship between this fact with the official celebration of Christmas.

The Germans give the name of Stomach Fat to the day before Christmas. They believe that those who do not eat well that night will be tormented by demons in her sleep. Of ginger cookies and dishes made from pork, pasta and salads, plus marzipan for dessert, make up the German Christmas dinner.

Moreover the decorations of the Christmas markets in Germany misspend lights and colors, creating a world of dreams and the style and the spirit of the season. A cultural program completes the schedule of attractions

Austria - The Christmas tree decorated with ornaments and candy and the Nativity scene make a perfect pair. The December 25 and 26 are national holidays and people used to visit family and neighbors. These meetings are served cold dishes such as cheese and bread and the traditional cookies and biscuits for Christmas. The Christmas in Austria is famous for being the country of origin of Franz Gruber, the composer of "Silent Night", the most famous Christmas song.

Australia - The Australian supper consists basically of turkey, ham and pork with plum pudding. The Christmas tree of Australians is different from all others, because it is a native shrub with small red leaves.

The Chinese Christians celebrate their Christmas decorating their homes with colorful lanterns of paper. Even the Christmas trees which are called "trees of light ', are decorated with lanterns, flowers and other decorations of paper. As the American children, the Chinese also hang their stocking feet for the Santa put the presents there. But there his name is a bit trickier. The old man is called Dun He Ren dao, which means ''Old Christmas'.

Egypt – The Egypt Christians celebrate the Christmas for four weeks and each one of them lit a candle. They fast for 40 days and not missing Christmas dinner of bread, rice, garlic and ground beef.
